With body massage comes new opportunities and obligations we all have to face. And I’ve done my best to deal with it. My forays into uncharted adult territory began in the pre-social media era, including platforms like Messenger. So, that’s something that introduced me to body massage and became part of my growth process.
Nowadays, body massage has become something else.
Young people, teens, and 20-somethings idealize what it means to be an adult, tease adult content, and only grow up when necessary, and it all shows in their newsfeeds.
After all, it’s not real if it’s not on social media.
Well, there will always be side-eye on maturity. Rising and evolving as an adult comes with many challenges. Today, we are all faced with the problematic nature of technology, social media, and the internet. This adds a layer of difficulty for new body massage. Furthermore, those who grow up with parents with disposable income are not well prepared and ready to become body massage therapists. They grew up in a barrier-free environment without understanding the consequences: body massage therapists are not prepared to be therapists today. Massage therapists are reinventing what it means to be mature. It is no longer defined by the ability to do laundry, cook, or do taxes. It is now completely different, which often becomes a problem. Young people starting in bodywork usually don’t know how to do everyday tasks without asking for help. While there’s nothing wrong with asking for help, it shows that we’re dealing with a generation that isn’t ready to enter the real world.
There’s no doubt that growing up will always be difficult
But being a solo massage therapist is more complex than ever. Those who have acquired basic life skills don’t have much difficulty. But others who haven’t yet feel paralyzed try to understand bodywork and all that goes with it, including careers, relationships, and parenting. Indeed, the pressure to grow into bodywork is seen as body shaming. So don’t condemn today’s body massage because they feel outdated.
